2017 Hall of Patriots Inductee
Gold Star Mother, Lisa Freeman
We are honored beyond measure to salute Lisa Freeman, a mother who turned a true tragedy into a means to help others through their struggles. Lisa and her family are wonderful selfless patriots, and we are so grateful to them. Below is a brief snapshot of the Freeman family’s remarkable story.
In 2009, Lisa’s son, Matthew Freeman, a Marine Corps Captain was killed in combat at 29 years old. In order to continue the legacy of her son, lost far too soon, Lisa created the “Matthew Freeman Project,” a charitable organization that provides a variety of support services including scholarships to veterans and their families. Special teddy bears created from the uniforms of fallen service members are given to families to provide comfort.
In speaking with Lisa, we learned more about her son, who was both an American hero and patriot. Matthew loved boating in the marshlands and was an Eagle Scout. He played saxophone in the marching band, sang at his graduation, and was a two-time tennis champion in high school. Matthew was an avid reader, completing all of Shakespeare’s works before he was a freshman in high school, and was in fact asked to teach upper level students!
Matthew was passionate about flying and thus enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy and became a Marine pilot. He followed three generations of Freemans with Navy wings. In 2009, he married his college sweetheart, Theresa, an Air Force officer. Just three weeks later, he heard the Marines needed support and bravely left the relative safety of his cockpit to engage in ground action. Right before Matthew died, he told his mother Lisa that children in Afghanistan would rather have pens and paper than even water, and he asked her to send some.
Lisa has been a Rush Limbaugh Show fan throughout her life. She was a teacher for thirty years and was starting her last school year before retirement when Matthew passed away. She told us that “God does work in mysterious ways.” The Matthew Freeman Project also continues to support children in Afghanistan and overseas in a supplementary project called Pens and Paper for Peace.
